Back Country Horseman At Galles Properties, giving back to the community is part of who we are - it’s what we call The Pagosa Way. Through the Galles Properties Community Fund, our agents contribute proceeds from every closing, which are then matched by Galles Properties. At the end of each year, those funds are distributed to local organizations that make a meaningful difference throughout Pagosa Springs and the surrounding region. Each month, we proudly spotlight one of the incredible organizations supported by the Galles Properties Community Fund. This month, we are honored to recognize the San Juan Chapter of Back Country Horsemen. Preserving Trails, Heritage & Access to the Backcountry For over 50 years, Back Country Horsemen has been dedicated to preserving access to public lands while protecting the traditions and heritage of horseback travel in the American West. Their volunteers work tirelessly to maintain trails, clear fallen timber, repair erosion damage, and ensure the backcountry remains accessible for everyone who enjoys the outdoors. Here in the San Juans, their work is especially important. From rugged alpine passes to remote wilderness trails, these volunteers help keep some of Colorado’s most beautiful landscapes open and usable for hikers, horseback riders, hunters, campers, and outdoor enthusiasts alike. The organization’s efforts are powered almost entirely by volunteers who donate their own time, equipment, horses and resources to complete the demanding work. ”Back Country Horsemen’s 50-year legacy of volunteerism protects backcountry trail access and preserves equestrian heritage,” says Ron Toland, President, San Juan Back Country Horsemen. “Our success relies on both volunteer stewardship and community support. Volunteers across the country - using their own stock, on their own time and on their own dime - spend thousands of hours clearing fallen trees and repairing trails, such as those right here in the San Juans, and the work benefits all trail users. Supporters like Galles Properties help keep the machine running as donations help purchase and maintain equipment, fund third-party support and provide matching grant funds for trail maintenance projects. On behalf of the San Juans chapter of Back Country Horsemen, I tip my hat to Galles Properties owners and brokers. Thank you!” Supporting Stewardship in the San Juans The San Juan Mountains are one of the defining treasures of Southwest Colorado. Maintaining safe and accessible trails across this rugged terrain requires tremendous dedication and ongoing support. The San Juan Chapter of Back Country Horsemen plays a vital role in preserving these outdoor experiences for future generations. Their stewardship not only protects access to public lands, but also strengthens the deep connection between our community and the outdoors. Galles Properties is proud to support organizations that invest directly into the quality of life, recreation, and heritage of our region. Community Matters The Galles Properties Community Fund exists because we believe strong communities are built through service, generosity, and local partnerships. Every real estate closing contributes toward supporting nonprofits and organizations that improve lives throughout Archuleta County and beyond. We are grateful for the dedication of the San Juan Back Country Horsemen and for the countless volunteers who continue to care for the trails and wilderness areas we all enjoy.
